Based on a neglected part of the nativity story, this cantata represents a meditation on how the deepest tragedies of life do not need to separate us from the glad tidings of Christ’s birth.

In fact, we perhaps understand the Messiah best when we countenance our own losses and those of others. In so doing, we glimpse how even the darkest human experiences can not withstand the light of Christ.
